Health Insurance Changes: Marketplace Open Enrollment

Change can be good.

It can also be confusing and a little daunting.

Recent transitions in Marketplace health insurance coverage may have you scratching your head, but don’t worry: Help is available.

Let’s break down what’s changing in 2019, what’s staying the same and why you need to talk with a qualified insurance advisor during this year’s Marketplace Open Enrollment to make sure your healthcare needs are met.

What’s staying the same in health insurance for 2019?

Despite the revisions for health insurance not EVERYTHING is changing.

Here’s a rundown of what won’t be different in 2019.

  • Dates. Marketplace Open Enrollment will still be active between November 1, 2018, and December 15, 2018 – just like it has for the past 5 years.
  • ACA exchanges. The state and federal exchanges that make up the Marketplace will still be in operation for Open Enrollment 2019. You can shop for plans and apply for income-based subsidies as you have in the past.
  • Individual shared-responsibility provision. This mandate is still in place, but the penalty isn’t, but we’ll get to that.

What’s changing for 2019?

There’s one big change that has everyone talking: You’ll no longer be subject to a tax penalty for being uninsured.

This change goes into effect on January 1, 2019.

One of the biggest benefits of the repeal of Obamacare is that you’ll have a lot more options for health care.

Depending on your needs, you can choose an ACA plan, but you don’t have to. You’re free to explore alternative coverage – such as short-term health insurance, for example – without fear of having to pay a tax penalty.

The changing landscape of healthcare – even good changes – can leave you feeling confused and frustrated.

Talking with an experienced advisor can clear up your questions and put you on the right health insurance path.

You’ll have someone in your corner who can look at your overall situation and make suggestions based on your needs and your budget.
