Recent events, like the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, have left some individuals and families with reduced income due to layoffs, reduced hours or termination of employment and the possible loss of health insurance coverage. If you or someone you know has recently lost coverage or will be losing coverage through an employer, is on an ACA Marketplace plan, or currently without health insurance, there are options available that may reduce your monthly premium or obtain affordable replacement coverage. View our new webinar on-demand, Personal Health Insurance Guidance: For Loss of Income Due to COVID-19.
Losing health insurance from an employer because of loss of employment or reduction in hours can be a difficult situation to navigate. There are many options in today’s health insurance landscape. COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) provides individuals or a family continuation of employer health insurance benefits for up to 18 months.
More affordable coverage options are also available based on personal situations and needs. Under the ACA (Affordable Care Act), individuals can enroll in plans regardless of pre-existing conditions. Subsidies or discounts may apply to reduce the true monthly premium cost.
For those in good health, a Short-Term Health Insurance Plan may be a better or more affordable option. Individuals 65 or older can take advantage of Medicare and insurance plans that include prescription drug, dental, vision and hearing coverage.
If you are currently enrolled in an ACA Marketplace plan and your household income has changed, this may affect your amount of savings and coverage you receive. If there is a change in income, an updated application should be submitted as soon as possible. If your income is projected to be lower you may qualify for an increase in the subsidy applied to further reduce your monthly premium.
